Natural Insomnia Remedies

For people who are frustrated on falling asleep, worry no more for there are numerous insomnia remedies available for you. The use of herbs is one common way and used by many to achieve the sleep they’ve been longing for.

Lettuce

Lettuce is known to be a good source of Vitamin A and folic acid. It contains lactucarium. It is a milky fluid secreted by all types of lettuce and since it has sedative properties, it was better known as “lettuce opium”. Romans and Egyptians eat lettuce after a meal to stimulate sleepiness and so people with insomnia are recommended to eat lettuce more often.

Calabash or Bottle Gourd

This fruit can be used in treating insomnia by mixing its juice and sesame oil. It is highly recommended to apply it to the scalp before sleeping. Chinese believe that this fruit absorbs the negative energies of the body.

Honey

Honey is not only used for cooking. In many years, it has also been used for treating illnesses and one is insomnia. Honey is a good hypnagogue for it induces sleep or drowsiness. In researches, honeys are used for babies so they can easily fall asleep. It is recommended to take honey with warm water.

Milk

A warm glass of milk before going to bed is one of the popular insomnia remedies. It does not act as a tonic only, but as a tranquilizer as well. It is much better if the sweetener to be used is honey. Milk for massaging the soles of the feet was found to be effective, too.

Curd

Curd is known to help induce sleep if massaged in the head.

Anise

Anise is an herbaceous plant cultivated in many countries for its medicinal credits. The seeds are used to make teas and is said to have good effects on the body. The tea is best to take before sleeping. To prevent insomnia, the seeds can also be mixed in a glass of warm milk.

Rauwolfia

Rauwolfia is also a popular herb used to relieve insomnia because of its tranquilizing properties. In ancient times, this herb was known to be hypnotic and was also used for babies. The useful part of this herb is its roots. The roots are turned into powder and mixed with scented agents. 0.25 grams of the drug should be administered to a person with chronic insomnia twice a day- morning and evening before going to bed.

Thiamine

Thiamine or aneurin is significant in the treatment of insomnia. It has important role in the human nervous system. Foods that are rich in thiamine include brown rice, oatmeal, potatoes, liver, eggs, and oranges. A person with thiamine deficiency would surely have organ system malfunction or disorders.

There are a lot of insomnia remedies that can be found in our surroundings. As what most people say, nature is the best healer.
